Storyteller Directory Entry

Alastair Kevin Daniel

For over twelve years Alastair Daniel toured schools in the UK and the Low Countries with The Story Tent. In 2010, Alastair made the move from professional storytelling to academia, and is currently Principal Lecturer in Primary English at the University of Roehampton. Alastair is an active researcher and writer in the field of educational storytelling, and continues to tell stories in local storytelling clubs, as well as periodically visiting schools with The Story Tent when his university commitments allow.

The Story Tent project came out of Alastair Daniel’s use of storytelling as a teaching strategy with children with profound emotional and behavioural difficulties. He found that storytelling (as contrasted with story-reading) provided a unique method of drawing children, who often had difficulties the imaginative play, into new worlds. For over twelve years the unique Story Tent style combined physicalisation, puppets, masks, costumes, artefacts, rhymes and songs with traditional and literary texts - students were encouraged to enjoy and participate fully in the retelling of traditional and classic tales to develop English language skills.
