Experienced storytellers to train young people to tell stories in public
This project training young people in speaking and listening through storytelling is funded by the Hamlyn Foundation and run by the Traditional Arts Team
The project will use two experienced storytellers to train young people to tell stories in public. This will be done in up to ten sessions leading to presentations of their stories to community audiences. Although this may be in their own setting it may well be in other children’s or community groups.
Graham Langley of the Traditional Arts Team explains: "The project will develop the young people's skills and confidence in public speaking through the art of storytelling. It will introduce them to traditional stories and give them opportunities to perform them within their own schools or settings and within the local community. One person from each group can be nominated to take part in Young Storyteller of the Year and there will be other opportunities for them to tell stories at other epublic events."
Young Storyteller of the Year takes place in Birmingham on Saturday 12 March 2012 (see ysoy.org.uk). Following this there may be other opportunities for the young people to tell at events and festivals around the country.
The projects may take place in or out of school time, usually at the rate of one session a week or may be delivered over an intensive period such as an arts week. Within each setting we will need a champion who will ensure the availability of the young people and the availability of appropriate place to work.
