The art of storytelling has come a long way since tales were passed on from family member to family member all those years ago. And, naturally, for a medium that has adapted with the times so easily, and given that recording a story being told can be simple as pressing play on a dictaphone, it’s not surprising that tales are being told through the very 21st century medium of the podcast. We round out some of the best out there, and hope that you’ll be able to give them a listen sometime to discover their many delights.
With the summer months come a whole shoal of storytelling festivals, both at home and abroad. We’ve already taken a look at a few of those taking place, but because we want to show you the full array of what’s out there (and whet your appetite a little further), here are some more events that will hopefully excite the young and the slightly less young, and inspire everyone from the wannabe teller to the old hand.
As the sun finally shines across the UK now, one’s thoughts turn to the summer, sea, sand and, well, storytelling (we’re sure it’s not just us...). Luckily for us all, then, that there are a whole slew of festivals dedicated to the craft returning for 2013 – some veterans of the scene with very healthy followings, some less established but still very much worthy of your time, effort, money and listening ears. We outline some of those coming up at home and abroad in this two-part guide, and hope that you’ll be tempted enough to pack a bag or two and join us down the front....
Even the most veteran storyteller can improve by taking a look at new approaches and new inspirations, as well as different opinions on their craft. Fortunately, there is a whole slew of storytelling courses out there on a range of subjects that can get you looking at your practice in an entirely different way, and can rejuvenate those who have got themselves into a creative rut. We’ll outline just a few of those being run in the near future, and hope that you might be tempted to sign up, whatever your level of expertise.
A new book about why stories matter and the ways of telling them by storyteller Josie Felce is now out, published by Floris Books at £14.99.
This book is inspiring, easy to read and relates the experiences of the author of how and why storytelling really can bring emotional development, or emotional literacy, to children. More than that, we constantly need stories to help us on our life journey!
